Human Threats on the

North Atlantic Right Whale

North Atlantic right whales, one of the most endangered large whale species in the world, have suffered greatly from centuries of commercial whaling. By the early 1900s, their population had been decimated, and today, only an estimated 340 individuals remain. Among the two primary causes of death and injury for North Atlantic right whales, vessel strikes pose a significant threat, alongside entanglements. Defenders of Wildlife persistently fights and advocates for the protection of North Atlantic right whales.

Although the size of school bus, #RightWhales are nearly impossible to see while underwater & slower vessel speeds are proven to help avoid collisions. Hitting a whale can be life-threatening for them & you!

When a #RightWhale dies & sinks to the ocean floor, it's body can sequester over 33 tons of CO2, removing it from the atmosphere for 100s of years – a whale that lives out a 60-year lifespan contributes $2M worth of ecosystem services to the planet!

Slow down for #RightWhales! Just like we slowdown in school zones to protect children, we must enforce speed limits for vessels to allow North Atlantic right whales to migrate safely & avoid collisions.

Vessel strikes & entanglements are the only known causes of adult mortality in #RightWhales. With calves & mothers especially threatened by human activities, we must protect this species from birth all the way to a natural end. Contact your rep now!

Humans are killing #NorthAtlanticRightWhales faster than they can reproduce. With fewer than 70 reproductive females remaining, vessel strikes & entanglements represent a very real threat to the species. Contact your Rep. now!

In the last 3 years, vessels have struck & killed 3 #RightWhale calves & one first-time mother in US waters. As calves are extremely vulnerable to vessel strikes & often do not survive, they need our help! Ask your representative to protect #RightWhales!

Reducing emissions is critical to the health of our planet & #RightWhales can help! Whales are critical “ecosystem engineers” that can sequester carbon, cycle nutrients in the ocean & increase ocean phytoplankton, which consume CO2 & create oxygen.
